How to: Force Windows 95 to use real-mode CD-ROM drivers.
Solution:
Open both the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files in Notepad, and remove the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -'. Save the file.
The following task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
1) Edit Autoexec.bat in Notepad:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'. (A submenu appears.)
c) Select 'Notepad'. (The 'Untitled - Notepad' window appears.)
d) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
e) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where drive is the letter of the local hard disk).
f) Click 'Open'. (The 'Autoexec.bat - Notepad' window appears.)
g) Create a backup copy of the file Autoexec.bat:
1] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
2] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\ AUTOEXEC.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
3] Click 'Save'. (The 'Autoexec.bak - Notepad' window appears.)
h) Locate the line with the filename Mscdex.exe.
i) If the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -' precedes the contents of the line:
1] Select the words ' rem - By Windows Setup -'. (The phrase is highlighted.)
NOTE: Windows 95 ignores any step that begins with the word 'rem' or with ';'
2] Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'.
j) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
k) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
l) Click 'Save'.
m) If a confirmation dialog box appears, click 'Yes'.
2) Open Config.dos in Notepad:
NOTE: If the computer does not have Config.dos, contact next-level support or a qualified computer technician.
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
b) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.DOS
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
c) Click 'Open'. (The 'Config.dos - Notepad' window appears.)
d) Locate the line(s) with the reference /<drive>:MSCD000
(where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive).
e) Write down the contents of that line for reference.
3) Open Config.sys in Notepad:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
b) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.SYS
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
c) Click 'Open'. (The 'Config.sys - Notepad' window appears.)
d) Create a backup copy of Config.sys:
1] Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
2] Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
3] Click 'Save'. (The 'Config.bak - Notepad' window appears.)
e) Locate the line(s) that you copied down from the Config.dos file.
f) If the phrase 'rem - By Windows Setup -' precedes the contents of the line:
1] Select the phrase ' rem - By Windows Setup -'. (The phrase is highlighted.)
2] Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Delete'.
NOTE 1: If there are two lines containing /<drive>:MSCD000 (where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive), make sure the line that matches the one found in Config.dos is NOT remarked out and the other line IS remarked out.
NOTE 2: A line is remarked out if the line begins with the word 'rem' or with ';'.
g) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
h) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.SYS
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
i) Click 'Save'.
j) If a confirmation dialog box appears, click 'Yes'.
k) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit' to close 'Notepad'.
4) Restart the computer:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Shut Down...'. (The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box appears.)
c) Select the 'Restart the computer' radio button and click 'Yes'. (The computer restarts, using real-mode drivers.)
